Evergreen Community Charter Reviews

It is an amazing place where children grow as individuals both academically and socially. They learn to be stewards of the earth, they learn to think, and they learn that learning is exciting! It is an outstanding community and I am blessed that my children are able to go to school in an environment that nurtures the whole child.

Evergreen's philosophy of 'community' is a collective effort of teachers, parents and students to teach, learn and take care of each other. I have 3 adopted children who are thriving in this environment of caring for nature as well as others who are less fortunate. I am so proud to be a part of this phenomenal school!

I love Evergreen because this is a school that offers kids multiple ways to learn. Students are presented with opportunities to connect their learning to the world around them. We teach life skills--how to be healthy, productive, contributing members of the world. I wish I went to this school when I was a kid.

I have 4 nieces and nephews that go to Evergreen. They are ahead of other schools scholastically, getting individual attention in each class and the various ways they provide studies are dynamite. My friends that have children of the same age haven't come close to reaching the quality of what Evergreen offers. I have moved away from the Asheville area, but I were there my kids would definitely go to Evergreen!!

My grandchildren love going to school. They are getting a very complete and well rounded education. The school has a sense of community that I don't see at other schools and it makes for a better learning atmosphere.

Evergreen has been a wonderful place for my child to be. Because it utilizes expeditionary learning he's able to have many hands-on experiences, including camping trips with his peers that grow in complexity as the children age. The staff cares about the students, and encourages parent involvement in many areas. My child was accepted to a charter school within walking distance of our house (after being on the waiting list for four years) but turned the opportunity down because he wanted to stay at Evergreen.

Evergreen keeps its students engaged and instills a love of learning. The curriculum & the Experiential Learning / Outward Bound model helps the students to find out who they are and encourages them to explore their strengths as different people in a community. Both my boys look forward to going to school every day!

Great community of teachers and parents working together, good scholastic support, and hands on experiential learning with an environmental and community service emphasis.

Evergreen is a true community school. Students learn to work together and how to be lifelong learners. Service is an important piece in Evergreen's program. Students begin in kindergarten learning the importance of service to the community. The environmental initiatives at Evergreen are everywhere! We are not just a 'green' school that is determined by the type of building that the students are housed in... Evergreen is green at heart! We have an old building that we have retrofitted to be the best that we can be. There are green bathrooms, LED lighting, storm water rain gardens, photovoltaic modules, waste free lunches, and so much more! Not to mention that our students are the best. Everyone of them knows that they can be successful and because of the support and respect that they receive here... they are!

Evergreen is an amazing school with truly dedicated teachers and staff. I love Evergreen because it is committed to our community and to our children. My children love Evergreen, too. The approach to learning at Evergreen is very hands-on, and the children take multiple field trips throughout the year to learn about their world, their community, and their environment. It offers my children the opportunity to grow within a community and within themselves - learning to respect themselves and the people and world around them.

It is a caring community that supports it's members through good and bad, teaches the kids to be kind, .loving, and to care for the earth, all while upholding high academic standards. It rocks!!

As a grandparent of a student at Evergreen, I am blown away by the nuturing spirit in the school, by not only faculty, but students alike. They support one another, lift each other up so they can reach their pursuits and goals. I love the fact that when my grandson's birthday came around, each student whispered in his ear the 'positive' things they wished him for his birthday; things like happiness, kindness, success at what he attempts, and more. Not only does the school support the students, but the students pass on this wonderful sense of belonging, by getting involved with helping people in the community and around the globe. The children have raised money for clean drinking water in Africa, and helped families destroyed by the hurricane in Haiti. The school is teaching respect for one another and the planet on which we exist. What an inspiring institution!

Evergreeen Community Charter School provides community for the children and families whose children attend the school. They also provide service to the greater community. The teachers are caring and dedicated to the children and the school stresses the importance of communty, the environment and service. Evergreen Community Charter School has provided an excellent education and an incredibly supportive environment for my children. The teachers are uniquely dedicated to their profession and to the needs of the children in their classrooms. I also appreciate the focus on outdoor learning and environmental education.

As an experiential learning school, there is an emphasis on hands-on learning rather than textbooks and rote learning or teaching to standardized tests. Students feel like a part of a caring community and are encouraged to treat each other, as well as the earth, with respect. The school focuses on emotional growth and well-being, as well as academics and teachers work together to address the needs of the whole child. So far, my 8-year-old and 13-year-old have thrived at this school. They even enjoy going to school, which is how it should be but often isn't!

Evergreen has values far above any I have witnessed in my 62 years. They make sure each student gives back to the community, to their parents, and to each other. This along with impeccable educational principles make this school tops!!!!!!!!

Both our children have attended Evergreen Community Charter School ( 10 years total between them ). The Design Principles which guide the school are totally integrated into all aspects of the school community ( it is an Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound school - check that website for the Design Principles ). The staff is responsive to the individual students' needs, and the input of their families. The academics are rigorous, while maintaining the benefit of experiential, individualized learning. A wonderful school all around.

ECCS is the most wholesome, energetic, thoughtful, outgoing, environmentally friendly, forward thinking school that I've ever seen!! There is no other school like it anywhere!! CHARTER school staff are underpaid, overworked and in it for all of the right reasons...the kids!!! ECCS fosters community at a time when families are often so busy that it's difficult to connect with each other. ECCS ROCKS!!!

Evergreen is an awesome school! Very community oriented and environmentally conscious, teaching skills kids will need for life (like how to distinguish between a celebrity and a hero). Great, respectful teachers who teach kids to respect themselves. They get all their basic education at Evergreen, and so, so much more! The kids love attending the school and I love being an involved aunt.

Evergreen has helped my child in so many ways. We came from a private school setting where everything as about who you were, your family name, etc. Evergreen has taught my child to be herself and respect herself. She has enjoyed the variety of learning that they offer through Evergreen.

Students at Evergreen experience learning by doing. They spend many days outside in fieldwork situations. It's experimental not theoretical learning. The environmental emphasis is also timely.

My son had attended two other schools in two years. I was very nervous when he started attending Evergreen. We had negative experiences at every school he attended thus far. After a couple of weeks, and no complaining, crying or sleepless nights, I asked him how it was going. He smiled and said 'you know this is not like school at all, we actually have fun while we are learning!' I was overjoyed! My child has been supported and encouraged daily. In the last three years it just keeps getting better! The teachers are interactive with the children. The teacher:student ratio is low. There is encouragement of the students to be themselves and to not judge others, to accept each other as individuals. The diversity of the student body is broad. The other thing is that the administration really cares about the success of each student, not just the numbers. In a charter school every person makes a difference and that really shows at Evergreen!
This review was posted by a parent.

The faculty and staff at Evergreen are constantly striving to provide acitivities and experiences for children to help them grow academically and socially; providing a sound foundation for students to become thoughful, intelligent, and responsible adults.

What every school should aspire to be like. At the local elementary school, my daughters used to want to be pop stars. Since they started Evergreen, they both want to join the peace corps, then become an environmental architect and a schoolteacher in Haiti. What more than that showcases the values of Evergeen? Every time President Obama talks about the importance of charter schools, I want to scream to local politicians to listen to him! THIS is what schools should do: promote community, sustainability, and service. Keep the minds of our children open. Charter schools all over need more help because they teach more than just test scores. Evergreen should be the example to which all schools aspire.

Evergreen is really an amazing school, and I'm really happy my daughter attends. The school focuses on healthy environmental responsibility, student independence and self-worth/respect. The teachers are really amazing individuals, who genuinely care about each student, and show it by the time and energy they spend with them. The school its self has a high initiative of earth-friendlyness, which is apparent in all ways (no-trash lunch, composting, solar panels, rain water ponds, student-led 'green' initiatives). I really wish this school was around when I was a child, as I would have absolutely loved attending, and I believe my whole outlook now on the public school system would be completely different. I stopped home-schooling my daughter because I realized this school had more opportunities than I could even offer her. Thank you Evergreen:)

My son, Otis Skipper, went to Evergreen from 1 - 8 grade and every single day he got up with an incredibly positive attitude -- wanting to go to school - additionally he always wanted to attend all school related events - and still goes back to the school frequently to visit teachers. Evergreen Community Charter School has allowed our son to be himself: an active, imaginative, can't-sit-in-a-chair for too long kind of kid. He has been encouraged and supported by all the adults he encounters at school. Evergreen is a K-8 school. Our family moved to Asheville, NC in order for our son to attend a charter school. We decided on Evergreen for Keaton (our son) who will be graduating this year. The school has been great. The staff their are good teachers and more importantly great people. They live what the preach and are truly trying to make the world a better place. (They have refitted their buses for biofuel, installed landscaping to naturally filter rain runoff, etc.) You can tell they are accomplishing good things at Evergreen by their reputation. My son is applying for a special science oriented school within a school in Asheville. The administration their has accepted many of the Evergreen students to their program and seem to think highly of Evergreen. All this combined with good scholastic performance makes me glad we had this opportunity for Keaton.

Evergreen is everything I want in a school for my children. The kids receive individualized instruction, framed within very interesting topics to keep them excited about school and learning. Evergreen strongly emphasizes environmental responsibility in a way that makes it a natural part of daily life for the kids. The people are nice, and everyone who works there is there because they believe in what Evergreen is doing. What a difference that makes! The students even work in Crews to learn about interpersonal relations and emotion management. I'm ELATED that my children get to go to Evergreen.

Both of my children attended Evergreen from the first grade. Both of my children have processing issues, however they both have very high IQ's. For several years I I addressed this with their teachers and also the special ed administrators. The staff at Evergreen insisted my children were in the best learning environment for for their disabilities. After having an independent evaluation completed on my son who is now in the 5th grade it turns out we were totally mislead by the staff at Evergreen. Children with ADD or ADHD should NOT EVER be in this type of learning environment. The faculty at this school are not qualified to teach children with special needs. Nor are they willing to admit any mistakes.

My daughter, loves her school! All summer she couldn't wait to get back. They have a great system, all-around, amazing field trips, wonderful teachers and staff, and there are so many open-minded people (students and teachers), that they make everyone feel welcome and accepted. If it were not for this school, I would still be homeschooling my daughter---but we stopped, after realizing that she had many more opportunities there than I could give her. This is our second year, and we are highly pleased (this is coming from a skeptical mother!)

Our family has been at Evergreen for 5yrs. and have another child starting this year. We've all loved it! Parent involvement is a huge part of ECCS and it shows. Parents, teachers, and students all have a sense of accountability that I've never seen in other schools. We were also chosen as the 2nd 'greenest' school in the US last year. Test scores are well above NC averages and they've accomplished this with hands on learning focusing on the environment and having fun. What other school do you know of that takes their 8th graders on an Outward Bound trip for nearly a week, or takes students snowboarding once a week, or has a marimba band. All I know is my kid loves school AND scores high on tests. We feel extremely lucky to be a part of Evergreen.

My son has been at Evergreen for four years and my daughter for two years. I have seen a large turnover in teachers every year and it has been difficult for my children, but necessary for the evolving school. The teachers are great, the administration could be more friendly, but it is improving. Test scores are not a determination of this school - come to Evergreen and see for yourself - the children are amazing - everyday!

I am both a teacher and a parent at Evergreen School. As a teacher, I have never been around such a dedicated and awesome staff! From the principal to the custodian, we all appreciate and learn from each other. As a parent, I am thrilled to have my children at ECCS. They are constantly challenged and are genuinely loved by their teachers...what more could you ask for?

My children are in the elementary grades at ECCS. This is our 3rd year and we have had a wonderful experience thus far! The teachers are exceptional, being able to aptly work with both accelerated learners and those with challenges. Evergreen's focus on hands on learning and environmental education & responsibility is another key area we appreciate. ECCS is in it's 6th year- therefore it has a ways to go in realizing it's mission and vision- needs foreign language classes, more arts, etc- but the school has a good start- my daughter was in 3 musicals last year in her 2nd grade class! It depends upon the teacher. The children really do become responsible learners and being an ELOB Outward Bound School, the children learn about integrity, challenging themselves, being good stewards & citizens, etc. WE LOVE EVERGREEN! There is a requirement for parent involvement- and we also really like that.

My children have been attending Evergreen for some time now, my daughter usually scores 4's on her E.O.G.'S, my son scores high too. Evergreen has such high principles of learning, the algebra 1 class, for some 8th grade students is exceptional. In the 2003-2004 algebra class, all but 1 student passed the E.O.C.'s (end of courses). The 8th grade social studies and language arts classes are wonderful, the students learn at the rate of a 10th grade honors class, this came from the mouth of a 10th grader. Even the 'challenged' students keep up and do good. If your child has problems with anger or doesn't try, i would not reccomend this school. But if your child just has a 'road block' in front of him or her, send them, the special services are great. This school has prepared my children for highschool in a way that A.M.S. cant match.

I have gone to Evergreen since I was in 3rd grade, I am currently in 7th grade attending school there. This school provides a good education for almost any kid who goes there. The administation takes their time to make sure that each student understands more than just reading, writing and arithmatics, they care about more than that. I would reccomend this school to anyone who was scouting for a good school.
